PASARBELLA (Part 1of 3) - My Seven Food Finds at the Market

My biggest mistake before going to this place is forgetting to charge the battery of my SLR camera. Now I have to resort to my Canon P&S camera, my Samsung tablet and iPhone. As expected I didn't have nice photos but I hope the images here are OK enough to share our experience in Pasarbella.

I've known Pasarbella through the internet. I just don't remember how I bumped into it.
From then, it is one of the places I wanted to visit in one of our family dates. I don't have any idea what's in there but I wanted to eat and discover.

This is the first part where I will share the dishes that we've tried while we were roaming around the market. It was time for lunch and I can't wait to get started.

I quote from their site: "PasarBella is the first multi-sensory grocery shopping destination in Singapore. With over 30,000 square feet of market space housing more than 30 unique stalls from around the world, PasarBella is the embodiment of its namesake, which is derived from the local term for ‘market’, and the Italian term ‘beautiful’.

Families can bask in the rustic interiors and reminisce the simpler days of yesteryear. The quaint stalls, exotic aromas and festivities are sure to enchant everyone."

Here are our Seven Food Finds at Pasarbella:

1. Paella from Le Patio
My main agenda for this trip is to try out the Paella in Le Patio.

See that huge skillet of Paella.. wowowoow!
A new one is being cooked on the other skillet.
Hmmm.. seems there is so much demand for this paella.

 Yum!

One order costs $13+.

Before you order any food, make sure to look for a table first. We went there on a Sunday and although it's not that crowded, almost all the tables were occupied.  There are more seats in the mezzanine level. We got a seat beside this flower studio (below) but it is not very comfortable as people pass by to check out the other stalls in both sides.

Lovely flowers from the Poppy Flora Studio.

2. Crackling Pork and Honey Roast Combo from Keith
https://www.facebook.com/roast.host.keith.kin

This is something I don't get to eat everyday but one of my favorites. We had the same dish in my hometown a.k.a "Bagnet". I got too excited and immediately headed to their stall after securing a table for hubby and me and baby.

Crackling Pork

Honey Roast

I bought the crackling pork and honey roast combo.
So yummy and I finished the whole pack all by myself since daddy K doesn't eat pork.

3. Gourmet Kebab from Shiraz Mazzeh

While I was busy munching my crackling pork, daddy K was at Shiraz Mazzeh buying his chicken kebab. I don't know why he wants to eat there when the purpose of our family date is to try new food/brand/resto. He always eats in Shiraz when he is in Orchard area or Clarke Quay. He just said he feels like eating a kebab. Ok fine! He also dragged me to a new table which is better and within the Shiraz area.

The staff of Shiraz doesn't mind bringing in food from other stalls as long as you order from them...  That's what I thought because they didn't say anything and almost everyone sitting there has a food pack from Le Patio. hehehe..

4. Sausage Set from James' Butchery & Co.
https://www.facebook.com/JamesButcheryCo

James’ Butchery & Co. is a new specialty butchery led by James Goodenough with 20 years experience in this industry. James & his dedicated team of skilled butchers will endeavour to provide a whole range of gourmet meat selection from beef, pork, poultry, lamb and veal.  James’ Butchery & Co. will be the one-stop place to meet all your epicurean needs.

5. Avocado Salmon Roll from
Oceans of Seafood Market
https://www.facebook.com/oceansofseafood

Across the Shiraz Mazzeh area, we saw this Japanese market and restaurant which sells seafood. You can buy the seafood from them and take it home or ask them to cook it for you and dine in.

Fresh oysters!

Japanese products sold at the Oceans of Seafood.

That time I wasn't into seafood since the Paella that I bought earlier already have some shrimp, mussels, etc. I ordered an Avocado Salmon Roll instead. Here's the complete menu.

6. Waffles on Stick with chocolate syrup from
Bitesize Monster

https://www.facebook.com/BitesizeMonster

7. Avocado Cacao Nibs from CICELY Kitchen

The brand is actually Popaganda but it is sold in Cicely Kitchen.
They have cool flavors. Check out more here at Popaganda web site.

  1. I like your post on PasarBella. Had a terrible experience at Cicely Kitchen (f.k.a. Five & Spice Kitchen) in PasarBella.

My partner ordered Brussels sprouts and sauteed mushrooms at Cicely Kitchen. Was informed that it would take 5-8mins. Instead, she was made to wait over for 30mins.

When asked if the food was ready, the staff's reply was there were many orders before hers. My partner's sis told the teenage staff that he should have informed my partner earlier instead. We had gotten other food and were waiting for her return.

I guess this comment must have peeved the boss Alicia Lin off. She came over, scooped the food from the cooking pan and chucked it to my partner & her sis. She said curtly "Nah, take it, take it."

Unfortunately, the food was not worth the wait of my family of 7 as both dishes were overly salty. Not wanting to waste our appetite on mediocre food (no problem though with the Boston lobsters, prawns, fish, paella, crackling roast, Iberico pork, russian cakes and the wonderful ale ordered), I took the sprouts back to Cicely Kitchen, told the crew that it was too salty and they can have it back. Sauteed mushroom got chucked unceremoniously into the bin. Anyway, I was not expecting any money back.

I believe if you want to run a F&B business, the least you can do is to be respectful of your patrons and cook them decent food. Else, you really should not be in this line. Based on what I read in The Straits Times SoShiok article, maybe home cook "extraordinaire" Alicia Lin knows that the end is near hence the terrible attitude.

Don't take my words for it. Maybe my palate was tainted by the Iberico pork and lobsters. You can try Cicely Kitchen again and see if you like the food or have better service.

    Well, I certainly didn't......
